About the position

The position is for a PhD graduate in Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), focusing on applied chemistry and physics. The role involves independent research aimed at developing novel sensors and analytical tools for national defense and security applications. The candidate will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to tackle significant challenges in the field, contributing to high-impact projects that require innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

• Synthesize and evaluate new small molecules in support of chemistry research projects related to defense and homeland protection.
• Evaluate emerging methods in synthetic chemistry, including continuous flow reactors and informatics-based approaches.
• Occasionally work alongside other chemists to scale up bench processes to 100 liters.
• Develop new methods for detecting threat-related chemicals.
• Propose innovative technical solutions to significant national problems.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in chemistry or a related technical field with a strong academic record.
• Highly skilled in research with the ability to propose new ideas.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other scientists and engage with the broader scientific community through publications, patents, and presentations.
• Ability to travel occasionally for meetings with government partners and operational stakeholders.
• Eligibility to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance and ultimately a Secret level clearance.

Nice-to-haves

• Postdoc experience.
• Broad synthetic experience including polymer chemistry and biochemical functionalization techniques.
• Skilled in chemical characterization methods, including spectroscopy and chromatography.
• Experience in national defense, terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction.
