About the position

The Intelligent Combat Platforms Group at APL is seeking a passionate and innovative PhD graduate to join our team as an Intelligent Autonomous Systems and Artificial Intelligence Engineer. This position is focused on developing cutting-edge technologies that will shape the future of our nation's security and military capabilities. As a member of our multidisciplinary team, you will work on a variety of projects that involve autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, software design, and simulation, all aimed at enhancing the operational advantage of the US warfighter. In this role, you will collaborate with experts in the field to conceive, design, prototype, and test new capabilities in intelligent autonomous systems. Your work will directly contribute to projects such as DARPA Air Combat Evolution, AFRL Golden Horde, and Air Force SkyBorg, which are at the forefront of military technology. You will engage in hands-on development, including writing code, creating algorithms, and supporting real-time demonstrations of autonomy in various test environments. We are looking for individuals who are not only technically skilled but also possess a high level of initiative and creativity. You will be part of a team that values innovation and collaboration, working together to tackle complex challenges and build the first generation of AI-enabled combat systems. Responsibilities

  • Work on collaborative teams in areas such as intelligent control and decision-making, human-machine collaboration, and software/hardware design.
  • Prototype and simulate AI systems by writing code, developing software, creating algorithms, and supporting real-time demonstrations of autonomy.
  • Contribute to all facets of the data-to-deployment lifecycle of machine learning models.
  • Collaborate with experts in AI and work with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and software developers.

Requirements

  • PhD Degree in a STEM area.
  • Skilled in C++ and/or Python with knowledge of software design patterns.
  • Ability to obtain an interim Secret security clearance by the start date.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, deep/reinforcement/machine learning, and robotics.
  • Experience in a modern software development environment including automated testing and continuous integration.
  • Proficiency in additional programming languages such as C, C#, Java, and MATLAB.
