About the position

The 2025 R&D Process Engineering Intern will work within AbbVie's R&D Process Engineering group, focusing on the assessment and development of process technologies for long-acting injectables of small molecules. The role aims to develop robust processes for manufacturing small molecule Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and related products, providing interns with hands-on experience in a dynamic pharmaceutical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory experiments and process modeling to support process understanding and optimization.
  • Address challenges in crystalline nanosuspension process development using expertise in thermodynamics and crystallization fundamentals.
  • Author and/or review technical documents summarizing process development efforts.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to identify process challenges and communicate findings effectively.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in chemical engineering or a related field.
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Expected graduation date between December 2025 - July 2026.
  • Prior experience in long-acting injectable formulations and process development.
  • Experience in small molecule crystallization.
  • Familiarity with operation of chemical/biochemical process equipment and systems.
  • Working knowledge of analytical techniques such as HPLC, PXRD, TGA/DSC, and microscopy.
