As a Controls Engineer Intern at General Motors (GM), you will play a crucial role in supporting the operation and maintenance of specialist equipment within our manufacturing plants. This internship is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in controls engineering and electrical support for industrial manufacturing equipment. You will be involved in various tasks that will enhance your skills in electrical root cause analysis and problem-solving, while also developing your leadership abilities to provide technical support and direction to skilled trades and support personnel within the organization. Quality and safety are paramount at GM, and as such, you will be expected to enforce safe work practices and implement objectives related to ergonomics, health, safety, and housekeeping. This includes investigating system and equipment problems and providing technical input for problem resolution. In this role, you will lead electrical projects that include new operations improvements, as well as periodic repairs and replacements. You will participate in functional area plant meetings to represent engineering and assist in achieving the plant's performance goals. Your responsibilities will also include developing cost estimates, investment forecasts, business cases, and plans for minor project activities. You will utilize statistical methods for continuous improvement on plant systems and develop and monitor planning timetables and project schedules. Additionally, you will coordinate and communicate changes aimed at improving conditions for the assembly process, program manufacturing technology such as PLCs, robotics, and HMIs, and analyze product, process, and technology to determine the best manufacturing methods. You will also assist in designing and building tools and equipment or recommend improvements to existing processes.
