About the position

As a 2025 Summer Intern in Manufacturing Controls/Electrical Engineering at General Motors, you will play a crucial role in supporting the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment within our manufacturing plants. This internship is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in controls engineering and electrical support for industrial manufacturing equipment. You will be involved in various tasks that will enhance your skills in electrical root cause analysis and problem-solving, while also developing your leadership abilities to provide technical support and direction to skilled trades and support personnel within the organization. Quality and safety are paramount at GM, and you will be expected to enforce safe work practices, implement objectives for ergonomics, health and safety, and maintain housekeeping standards. This will involve investigating system and equipment problems and providing technical input for problem resolution. In this role, you will lead electrical projects that include new operations improvements, as well as periodic repairs and replacements. You will participate in functional area plant meetings to represent engineering and assist in achieving the plant's performance goals. Your responsibilities will also include developing cost estimates, investment forecasts, business cases, and plans for minor project activities. You will utilize statistical methods for continuous improvement on plant systems and develop and monitor planning timetables and project schedules. Additionally, you will coordinate and communicate changes to improve conditions for the assembly process, program manufacturing technology such as PLCs, robotics, and HMIs, and analyze product, process, and technology to determine the best manufacturing methods. You will also assist in designing and building tools and equipment or recommend improvements to existing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Leads electrical projects including new operations improvements and periodic repair and replacement.
  • Participates in functional area plant meetings and related activities to represent engineering and assist in reaching the plant's performance goals.
  • Develops cost estimates, investment forecasts, business cases, appropriation requests, and plans for minor project activity.
  • Utilizes statistical methods for continuous improvement on plant systems.
  • Develops and monitors planning timetables and project schedules.
  • Coordinates and communicates the development of changes to improve conditions for the assembly process.
  • Programs manufacturing technology (PLC, robotics, HMI).
  • Analyzes product, process, and technology to determine the best methods of manufacture.
  • Assists in the design and building of tools and equipment or recommends improvements to existing processes.

Requirements

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Controls Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • Must be graduating between December 2025 and May 2028.
  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.
  • Willing to work in a plant environment.
