About the position

The Chemical Biotechnologies Co-op position at Merck Sharp & Dohme offers an opportunity for students to engage in hands-on research within the Research & Development Division. This co-op lasts up to 6 months and involves working on projects related to drug discovery and development, specifically in the areas of biocatalysis, protein engineering, and microfluidics. Co-ops will collaborate with scientists in a laboratory setting, gaining practical experience and contributing to innovative solutions in pharmaceutical research.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the invention and development of biomolecules to advance the company's pipeline.
  • Work alongside scientists in a laboratory environment to impact drug discovery and development.
  • Develop novel approaches and proteins for enzyme-catalyzed reactions relevant to drug-like molecules.
  • Solve key challenges in biocatalysis, protein engineering, and microfluidics.
  • Participate in departmental and project team meetings to understand the drug discovery process.
  • Record research methods accurately and adhere to safe laboratory practices.
  • Present research results in both oral and written formats.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Material Science.
  • Graduate students pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. in relevant fields are also eligible.
  • Completion of at least two years of study toward a bachelor's degree by June 2025.
  • Availability to work full-time for approximately 4-6 months from May 2025.

Nice-to-haves

  • Significant interest in organic chemistry, enzymology, protein design, directed evolution, chemical engineering, or bioengineering.
  • Basic laboratory skills and research experience, including lab notebook recording and safe lab practices.
  • Experience with chemistry laboratory set-up techniques and purification techniques.
  • Exposure to analytical techniques such as HPLC, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and spectrophotometric techniques.
  • Experience with PCR techniques, biochemical assays, and data analysis.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
