About the position

Old Sturbridge Village is seeking enthusiastic and experienced instructors for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers After School Program. This program caters to students from Old Sturbridge Academy, a public charter school located on the Old Sturbridge Village campus, serving grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade. The 21st Century Learning Centers Program (21st CCLC) is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education and focuses on providing enriching after-school experiences through project-based learning. Instructors will engage with groups of 10 or more students throughout the school year, utilizing a combination of pre-designed curriculum and their own creative project-based clubs that delve into subjects such as history, science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The position requires a commitment of 9 to 17 hours weekly during the school year, from late August to June. Instructors will participate in ongoing professional development and training aimed at enhancing classroom management skills and effective lesson delivery. This role is structured around a school-year schedule, with an example work schedule for 2024-25 including Monday afternoons from 12:30 to 5:30 PM, and Tuesday to Thursday from 1:30 to 5:30 PM, with additional time allocated for training and planning as necessary. The hourly pay for this position starts at $18.50. Instructors are expected to create engaging learning experiences, prepare necessary materials, and maintain a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. They will also be responsible for fulfilling professional commitments, promoting diversity and equity, and supporting program-wide behavior expectations. This role reports directly to the Director of Museum Education: School & Community Partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Plan Club Activities that have a clear purpose and are intentional with an ongoing project students are working towards
  • Deliver engaging learning experiences to groups of 10-12 students
  • Prepare supplies, materials, and physical spaces for programs
  • Fulfill all professional commitments, such as completing time cards, responding promptly to emails, etc.
  • Create a supportive student-centered learning experience for diverse learners
  • Communicate respectfully to all staff and students
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility
  • Support and enforce program-wide behavior expectations for students
  • Attend training and professional development sessions as required
  • Assist in all aspects of the program

Requirements

  • Enjoys working with children, especially in an educational environment
  • Experience working with and managing students in small or large group settings (informal or formal educational settings)
  • Interested in history and science, and sharing it in tangible ways
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Able to work cooperatively with diverse groups of children and adults
  • Reliable and detail-oriented
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, maturity, good moral character, patience, and self-control
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve conflicts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Minimum of Associate's degree or at least two years of college; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
