About the position

The Special Education Assistant (SEA) at East High is responsible for providing instructional support and reinforcement to students with disabilities in various academic, behavioral, and functional areas. This role involves implementing curriculum and behavioral intervention strategies under the guidance of a teacher, assisting with personal care tasks, and maintaining student confidentiality. The SEA will work closely with students who have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support and reinforcement to students in academic, behavioral, and functional areas across school, community, and vocational settings.
  • Implement curriculum and behavioral intervention strategies under the direction of a teacher and/or related services staff.
  • Assist with personal care tasks such as tube feeding, diapering, and mobility training.
  • Maintain student confidentiality, including written records.
  • Assist with coordination and communication activities with other staff regarding student performance.
  • Collect and document data on student progress in academic and behavioral areas.
  • Monitor and implement positive behavior strategies and behavior intervention plans.
  • Provide supervision during lunch, recess, and field trips.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and district-level training.
  • Assist with loading and unloading school buses and preparation of instructional materials under a teacher's direction.

Requirements

  • Ability to provide individual and small group instructional reinforcement.
  • Ability to work independently with students in various settings under the direction of a teacher.
  • Ability to keep accurate student data and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with physically aggressive students and those who are nonverbal.
  • Ability to follow teacher direction and individual education programs.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse students, staff, and community.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing, bending, reaching, and kneeling.
  • Basic computer skills including email, internet, and word processing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Prior experience working in a public school setting.
  • Experience working with children who have disabilities or are non-ambulatory/nonverbal.
  • CPR certification and first aid training.
