About the position

The part-time ELL Level I Evening Teacher at Somerville Public Schools is responsible for delivering engaging and effective English language instruction to adult immigrant students at beginning levels of proficiency. The role focuses on creating a learner-centered environment that adheres to standards-based and evidence-based instructional practices, integrating technology to enhance learning and preparing students for academic and career success. The position requires collaboration with other educators and participation in professional development to continuously improve teaching strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver rigorous lessons that align with the ELL Department's Curriculum Guidelines and the MA DESE English Language Proficiency Standards.
  • Translate class objectives, student learning outcomes, and class materials into learning activities appropriate for students' ELL levels.
  • Update and modify materials and lessons regularly to maintain relevance and efficacy, collaborating with other teachers to share resources.
  • Guide students in the acquisition of English and help them understand the target culture while affirming their own cultural backgrounds.
  • Help students identify and set personal goals, ensuring they make sufficient progress toward achieving those goals.
  • Implement diagnostic and progress assessment measures to evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as taking attendance, administering and grading assessments, and communicating with students about their progress.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with education and career advisors on career/college readiness instruction.
  • Encourage collaboration between team members to ensure performance goals are met.
  • Follow department policies regarding instruction delivery and progress monitoring.
  • Participate in school and community events, including seminars and graduation ceremonies.
  • Integrate technology into instruction and engage in continual professional development.
  • Adhere to rules of student confidentiality and complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Possession of a teaching license.
  • Experience working with and teaching adult learners and diverse populations.
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity.
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles and materials to meet individual student needs.
  • Bilingual educator preferred.
  • BEST Plus and TABE-e Reading certification preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various teaching approaches for ESL.
  • Ability to integrate technology to enhance instruction.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with adult basic education and ELL instruction.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts' DESE-ACLS program guidelines and performance indicators.
  • Proven history of successful collaboration in educational settings.
