About the position

The School Nurse at Madison Metropolitan School District plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of students and staff. This position is part of an integrated pupil services team that collaborates with educators, families, and community organizations to create a supportive environment for learning. The School Nurse advocates for educational equity, promotes the healthy development of students, and leads systemic change within the school community. The role involves developing health policies, creating individualized care plans, and ensuring compliance with health regulations, all aimed at fostering a thriving educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in the development and evaluation of school-based health policies and procedures.
  • Participate actively on the Student Support and Intervention Team (SSIT).
  • Develop Individualized Care Plans (IHP) and monitor interventions and outcomes.
  • Create Emergency Health Plans (EHP) for students with life-threatening health conditions.
  • Train and monitor non-nurse school staff on nursing interventions and medication administration.
  • Participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 teams.
  • Educate school staff about chronic illness implications on academic success.
  • Promote attendance and engagement of students with chronic health conditions.
  • Plan and implement transitions for students with IHPs and EHPs.
  • Coordinate care with families and community partners.
  • Facilitate enrollment in BadgerCare for eligible students.
  • Provide classroom instruction on health topics.
  • Implement health promotion activities for the school community.
  • Monitor environmental safety in collaboration with the building principal.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning and response.
  • Provide emergency treatment for health crises such as anaphylaxis and severe asthma episodes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Current valid license to practice as a registered professional nurse in Wisconsin.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Basic Emergency Care Course completion within 6 months of employment or within 3 years prior to employment.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and commitment to improving cultural competence.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous school nurse experience.
  • 2 to 3 years experience in a hospital or clinic setting.
  • Master's prepared pediatric or family nurse practitioner with appropriate certification.
  • National School Nurse Certification.
