About the position

Hyster-Yale Group, Inc. (HYG) is seeking a Continuous Improvement Engineer I for the 2nd Shift in Berea, Kentucky. This role is pivotal in enhancing manufacturing processes through continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on automation, robotics, and digital systems. The engineer will be responsible for validating manufacturing processes to ensure they meet engineering requirements and objectives. This includes conducting capability studies, gauge R&R analysis, and utilizing DFT guidelines for both new and existing processes and parts. The Continuous Improvement Engineer will also manage the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) process, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to resolve issues, particularly those that are customer-facing. The role requires specifying and justifying appropriate process validation equipment and gauging to align with engineering standards. Additionally, the engineer will address daily quality issues arising from various sources, including NCRs, line faults, and other quality metrics. A significant aspect of this position involves leading warranty cost reduction efforts through effective problem identification and resolution using quality tools. The engineer will utilize Continuous Improvement (CI) methodologies such as Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Control Plans, and Six Sigma to drive improvements. Flexibility across multiple value streams is essential to provide support to different processes, as well as collaboration with the Innovation and Automation Strategy and the New Product Introduction (NPI) Team.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and lead continuous improvement activities in manufacturing processes including automation, robotics, and digital systems.
  • Perform validation of manufacturing processes to verify process objectives meet engineering requirements.
  • Conduct validation of new and existing processes/parts for manufacture and/or assembly utilizing DFT guidelines including capability studies and gauge R&R analysis.
  • Manage the NCR process to determine causes and actions needed to resolve issues and provide feedback through the Contact Management system.
  • Specify and justify suitable process validation equipment and gauging to meet engineering standards.
  • Resolve day-to-day quality issues from NCRs, line faults, FTTq, PDI, TDQ, and other sources.
  • Lead warranty cost reduction through problem identification and resolution using Quality Tools.
  • Lead teams using CI tools such as APQP (FMEA, Control Plans, MSA), GPS, 6σ, and other applicable tools.
  • Provide support to Innovation and Automation Strategy.
  • Support the New Product Introduction (NPI) Team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field preferred or Associates degree with 3-5 years of relevant work experience in manufacturing.
  • 3-5 years' experience in manufacturing or equivalent education.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing processes and problem-solving techniques.
  • Analytical ability to resolve minor problems and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Skills in planning, organizing, and time management with a proactive approach.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to function as a team player.
  • Knowledge of Quality tools such as APQP, Control Plans, FMEA, PPAP, MSA, 6σ, lean manufacturing, auditing, and computer applications.
