About the position

The 2nd Shift Custodian position at Geneva Community Unit School District 304 is a full-time role located at Fabyan Elementary. This position is essential for maintaining a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, teachers, and the community. The custodian will work a 40-hour week, primarily during the second shift, and will be responsible for a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks throughout the school. The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and while previous custodial experience is preferred, it is not mandatory as this is considered an entry-level position. The custodian will be expected to communicate effectively in English, follow written and oral instructions, and perform various housekeeping functions including cleaning classrooms, restrooms, and common areas. The job also involves operating custodial equipment and maintaining effective working relationships with staff and students. The custodian will report to the Head Custodian and will be tasked with performing daily cleaning routines, including emptying trash, sanitizing surfaces, and ensuring that all areas are kept in a clean and orderly condition. Responsibilities also include selecting and transporting cleaning supplies, reporting maintenance issues, and participating in team activities as needed. The custodian will be expected to take pride in their work and represent the school positively to students and community members. The position requires physical stamina, as it involves considerable walking, standing, and the ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds. The custodian will also need to comply with safety and cleaning regulations, including the Green Cleaning Act and Integrated Pest Management Program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all tasks as assigned by the Director of Facility Operations or Building Services Coordinator.
  • Maintain an assigned area of the District in an orderly, safe, and clean condition.
  • Select materials and supplies from the supply room, load utility cart, and transport to work area.
  • Clean assigned areas by washing furnishings, floors, and equipment with special cleaning solutions.
  • Use dust cloths and vacuum cleaner to dust window sills, blinds, floor, and furniture.
  • Empty wastebaskets and arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion.
  • Scour and polish sinks, shower areas, water fountains, mirrors, and similar equipment.
  • Stock supplies of soap, paper towels, and other dispensable items.
  • Change light bulbs that can be reached with a 6 ft. ladder as needed or per assigned work order.
  • Report any mechanical failures or negative conditions as observed in the assigned area to supervisor.
  • Participate in completion of assigned work orders and initiate work orders when necessary.
  • Function independently as applicable to assigned work.
  • Maintain your area with a sense of pride as it represents what you do.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a school custodian or equivalent custodial service experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and understand simple written and oral instructions in English.
  • Ability to perform all housekeeping functions and duties listed.
  • Ability to operate vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, and other custodial equipment effectively.
  • Ability to navigate and operate cellphone, computer, and district software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
