About the position

As a 2nd Shift Stationary Engineer, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and adjustment of various equipment including boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, and cooling towers. Your role is crucial in ensuring the efficient functioning of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting, and associated equipment within the facilities. You will perform periodic inspections and minor repairs, as well as preventive maintenance, while taking responsible charge of a watch. This position requires you to read meters, gauges, and recording devices, log data, keep records, write reports, and inspect low-pressure boilers. You will also be tasked with powering down, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and restoring the operation of medium to high-pressure steam boilers, handling complex repairs, and working at locations with high-pressure steam systems. In this role, you will monitor power plant equipment and indicators to detect operating problems, adjust controls to generate specified electrical power or regulate power flow, and control power-generating equipment using control boards or semi-automatic equipment. You will be responsible for regulating equipment operations based on instrument data or computer input, making minor repairs, and recording and compiling operational data in forms, logs, or reports. Additionally, you will receive outage calls and coordinate necessary personnel during emergencies, prepare equipment malfunction reports, and determine equipment status. Your duties will also include taking regulatory action based on readings from charts, meters, and gauges, starting or stopping generators, auxiliary pumping equipment, turbines, or other equipment, and inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing power plant equipment as necessary. This position is fully on-site within a hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and operates on a 2nd shift schedule from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The pay for this position starts at $43 per hour. Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, and cooling towers.
  • Perform periodic inspections, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance.
  • Take responsible charge of a watch and log data, keep records, and write reports.
  • Inspect low-pressure boilers and power down, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and restore operation of medium to high-pressure steam boilers.
  • Handle complex repairs or work at locations with high-pressure steam systems.
  • Monitor power plant equipment and indicators to detect operating problems.
  • Adjust controls to generate specified electrical power or regulate power flow.
  • Control power generating equipment using control boards or semi-automatic equipment.
  • Regulate equipment operations based on instrument data or computer input.
  • Make minor repairs, such as tightening leaking gland and pipe joints.
  • Record and compile operational data in forms, logs, or reports.
  • Receive outage calls and coordinate necessary personnel during emergencies.
  • Prepare equipment malfunction reports and determine equipment status.
  • Take regulatory action based on readings from charts, meters, and gauges.
  • Start or stop generators, auxiliary pumping equipment, turbines, or other equipment.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair power plant equipment as necessary.
  • Control or maintain auxiliary equipment like pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, feed water heaters, filters, or chlorinators.
  • Clean, lubricate, or maintain equipment to prevent failure or deterioration.
  • Open and close valves and switches to start or shut down auxiliary units.
  • Assist leaders in assigning work to team members for safe and efficient plant operation.
  • Assist in training other team members on daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of plant equipment.

Requirements

  • Experience operating and maintaining boilers and other power plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret meters, gauges, and recording devices.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance and minor repairs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in stationary engineering or related field.
  • Experience in a hospital or healthcare facility environment.
  • Familiarity with high-pressure steam systems.
