The Psychiatric/Mental Health (PMH) Registered Nurse plays a crucial role in promoting well-being through prevention and education, as well as the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. This position requires a wide range of nursing skills, psychosocial understanding, and neurobiological knowledge. The PMH RN is expected to demonstrate the ability to make clinical judgments effectively and efficiently, showcasing critical thinking and performance abilities in coordinating patient care. The nurse will work in various settings, providing comprehensive care to individuals, families, and communities when applicable. In this role, the PMH RN will utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care within a psychiatric facility setting. They will partner with individuals to help them achieve their recovery goals, conduct intake screenings, evaluations, and triage, and provide case management. The nurse will also teach self-care activities, administer and monitor psychobiological treatment regimens, and practice crisis intervention and stabilization. Engaging in psychiatric rehabilitation and intervention, the PMH RN will educate patients, families, and communities while coordinating care within interdisciplinary teams. The PMH RN will evaluate signs and symptoms indicating physiological and psychosocial changes in patients' conditions, identifying and prioritizing actions based on patient care requirements. They will ensure a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic patient environment, revising care plans according to evaluations and changes in psychiatric and medical plans of care. A strong awareness and understanding of suicide prevention, as well as knowledge of community resources and outpatient programs for mental health and substance use disorders, are essential. Adherence to facility/client procedures and protocols is mandatory, and the nurse may perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
