About the position

The School Counselor at IDEA Public Schools plays a crucial role in leading family engagement, social emotional learning programs, and coordinating mental health and counseling supports for students. This position is designed to ensure that all staff build authentic relationships with students and families, maintain accurate data for effective interventions, and support the academic and social success of all scholars. The School Counselor is responsible for creating a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive both academically and emotionally, ultimately guiding them towards college readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the execution of the school vision for retaining all students by managing stakeholders in family engagement and student persistence.
  • Provide individual/group counseling for at-risk students and refer them to specialized services as needed.
  • Plan and execute student and family engagement events that align with the school's culture and community needs.
  • Conduct professional development for staff to clarify roles in family engagement.
  • Manage student persistence data to ensure accuracy and report trends to stakeholders.
  • Partner with grade level teams to coordinate interventions for at-risk students.
  • Facilitate parent conversations to address student and family needs.
  • Coach and develop teachers in supporting students' social/emotional needs.
  • Direct implementation of state-mandated guidance lessons to develop life skills and resilience.
  • Conduct individual and group check-ins with students to address social-emotional issues.
  • Lead family communication platforms and administer surveys to gather feedback from parents and students.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field.
  • Previous experience in a school or school setting.
  • Valid TX School Counselor certification or counseling licensure (LMSW, LCSW, LCSW-S, LPC-A, LPC, LMFT-A, LMFT) required.
  • Proven track record of success in a school environment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage student behavior effectively.
  • Belief in and alignment with IDEA's mission and values.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data management and analysis for school-based interventions.
  • Familiarity with community agencies that support student needs.
