About the position

The Human Resources Specialist at the University of Hawaii serves as the lead HR professional for the College of Engineering, overseeing all aspects of human resources management and administration. This includes recruitment, compensation, benefits, staff development, and compliance with HR policies. The role requires creative problem-solving and the ability to advise on HR matters while maintaining personnel records and ensuring adherence to university and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead Human Resources Specialist for the College of Engineering.
  • Manage recruitment and selection processes for college staff.
  • Oversee compensation, benefits, and leaves for employees.
  • Develop and conduct training related to HR matters.
  • Maintain HR documents and records in compliance with policies.
  • Advise on salary recommendations and adjustments for faculty and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with ADA accommodations and HR policies.
  • Handle workers' compensation claims and employment verification requests.
  • Conduct investigations on complaints and grievances.
  • Collaborate on annual organizational chart updates and vacancy reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
  • 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in human resources or related field.
  • Considerable knowledge of HR principles, practices, and applicable laws.
  • Ability to resolve complex HR problems creatively and effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with HR database management systems such as PeopleSoft.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of HR policies and procedures of UH and RCUH.
  • Experience conducting investigations and working with unions.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions in conflict situations.
  • Valid government notary.
