About the position

The Data Web Architect position is a critical role within the school district, responsible for transforming and managing data to ensure its effective use in educational settings. This position involves migrating school district data to the State Education Department (SED) data warehouse and other databases, ensuring that data is accurately collected, stored, and analyzed. The Data Web Architect will manage the full life cycle of database development, which includes writing specifications, configuring database servers, creating databases, and overseeing their security, backup, recovery, and troubleshooting processes. In addition to database management, the role encompasses the full life cycle of web-based applications. This includes writing specifications, configuring web servers, maintaining DNS records, and ensuring the security of applications through secure certificates. The Data Web Architect will work closely with school district employees and external organizations to troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to data collection, storage, retrieval, and analysis. The position also requires the development of strategies to improve the validity and consistency of school district data, as well as the establishment and maintenance of data standards in accordance with industry best practices. The Data Web Architect will research and recommend new database and web technologies that can enhance the district's data usage and analysis capabilities. Furthermore, the role involves ensuring that the Student Information and Management System application is utilized to its full potential by staying updated with vendor documentation and software updates, rolling up student data annually, and providing both standard and custom reports to district staff, ensuring their accuracy through regular reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Transform school district data for migration to State Education Department (SED) data warehouse and other databases.
  • Manage the full life cycle of database development, including writing specifications, configuring database servers, creating databases, managing, securing, backing up, recovering, and troubleshooting.
  • Manage the full life cycle of web-based applications, including writing specifications, configuring web servers, maintaining DNS records, maintaining secure certificates, coding, securing, backing up, recovering, and troubleshooting.
  • Work closely with school district employees and other organizations to troubleshoot and resolve data collection, storage, retrieval, and analysis issues.
  • Develop strategies to improve the validity and consistency of school district data.
  • Develop and maintain school district data standards in accordance with industry standards.
  • Research and recommend new database and web technologies that could improve the school district's ability to use and analyze data.
  • Ensure the program is used to its potential by reading vendor documentation and monitoring vendor updates to the Student Information and Management System application.
  • Update the Student Information and Management System application, roll up student data annually, and update system software.
  • Work with district staff to provide required standard and custom reports and review these reports on a regular basis for accuracy.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with at least a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Resource Management, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of full-time, paid experience in the analysis, design, and programming involved in information resources management.
  • Good knowledge of designing, creating, and managing relational databases, including SQL and JAVA.
  • Good knowledge of managing web-based applications.
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
