About the position

The Unskilled Maintenance Helper at Ports America Shared Services, Inc. plays a crucial role in maintaining operational efficiency and cleanliness within the maintenance and repair shop. This position involves a variety of tasks including parts management, equipment maintenance checks, and assisting with large deliveries, all aimed at supporting the overall functionality of the marine terminal operations.

Responsibilities

  • Pick up parts as needed from front gate or directly from vendors.
  • Label and put parts away from runs and incoming freight daily.
  • Perform general shop cleanup and garbage/recycling duties.
  • Drop off packages to Fed-Ex (Reefer Electronics and Oil Samples).
  • Conduct daily checks of water level in parts washer to prevent motor burn-up.
  • Unload large deliveries via forklift, including wire ropes, transmissions, motors, chassis orders, compressors, etc.
  • Repair tires and conduct gate and roadability inspections, and fueling.
  • Ensure all cores are returned to vendors in the proper timeframe for credit.
  • Assist powervac vendor when washing reefer rows and wash pit.
  • Steam clean containers in work areas.
  • Manage swapping out all drain socks on a semi-annual basis.
  • Assist Eco-Lube with waste pickup and report on when pickup/delivery is needed.
  • Tackle organization projects for reefer and overflow parts.
  • Restock bathroom and breakroom supplies.
  • Keep oil containment area clean and tidy for environmental inspections.
  • Help with the movement of parts when transitioning locations in the future.
  • Rearrange parts to create space for more general stocking items when necessary.
  • Complete special projects as assigned by General Foreman, Working Foreman, and Management.
  • Assist Journeyman mechanics as needed.
  • Restock water cooler weekly.
  • Restock main parts room with aerosols and cleaning products from overflow container.
  • Provide coverage for parts room staff when on vacation.
  • Cross train for purchasing, estimates, and bids for any future staff movements.
  • Cross train on revenue billing to assist staff when needed and/or cover positions for PTO.

Requirements

  • Experience working in maintenance and repair shop and/or commercial tire repairs.
  • A combination of two years of maintenance, mechanical, or parts experience preferred.
  • Must be a member of the IAM Union and governed by the applicable bargaining unit agreement.
  • Obtain and maintain TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Valid US Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Parts room experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Terminal billing systems desired.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
