About the position

The 911 Dispatcher / Radio Communications Operator plays a crucial role in public safety by providing communication services for various agencies utilizing the State Patrol Communications System. This position involves receiving emergency calls, determining the nature and location of emergencies, and maintaining contact with units on assignment. The dispatcher operates various communications equipment and assists the public in emergency and non-emergency situations, ensuring effective and timely responses to incidents.

Responsibilities

  • Receive emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical, or other emergency services.
  • Determine the nature and location of emergencies and prioritize responses using a Computer Assisted Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Maintain contact with all units on assignment and monitor their status and location.
  • Answer non-emergency calls for assistance and information.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information from various computer systems.
  • Monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies (VHF/800Mhz).
  • Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio dispatch consoles and E911 telephones.

Requirements

  • One year experience in a high-volume customer service-related field or a post-secondary certificate.
  • One year experience as a dispatcher for public safety or military entity, or a 911 Telecommunications Certificate or equivalent with six months customer service or law enforcement experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to proficiently keyboard/type a variety of documents accurately.
  • Effective listening skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations and be aware of surroundings while receiving information.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional certification(s) from APCO, NENA, or NAED.
  • Experience as a full-time police officer.
  • Post-secondary certificate or degree.
