The 911 Dispatcher for the City of Minneapolis plays a crucial role in the emergency response system, answering calls for police, fire, and EMS assistance. This position requires prioritizing and dispatching calls at the Minneapolis Emergency Communication Center (MECC), which operates 24/7. Dispatchers are the first point of contact for citizens in need of help, making their role vital in ensuring public safety and effective emergency response.

  • Answer and process emergency and non-emergency requests for service using the 911 telephone and Computer-Aided-Dispatch (CAD) systems.
  • Classify requests according to department procedures and policies.
  • Provide ongoing updates to responding field personnel in real time.
  • Alert appropriate supervisory personnel when necessary.
  • Initiate emergency phone tracing for landlines and cell phones.
  • Operate the information radio and handle incoming messages from various agencies.
  • Process service requests for multiple agencies, including police and fire departments.
  • Enter missing and found person reports in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.
  • Monitor and respond to ShotSpotter and bait vehicle activations.
  • Process warrant checks and license plate checks as requested.
  • Monitor messages from the State computer system and disseminate information appropriately.
  • Send teletype messages to other agencies.
  • Assist in training and evaluating new MECC Call Takers and provide classroom training as needed.
  • Attend community meetings and represent MECC on committees and special projects.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years of Dispatch/Call Taker experience in a fast-paced, 911 environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Minnesota Criminal Justice Data Network Certification or pass CJIS Competency Exam within 6 months of employment.
  • Typing speed of 45 words per minute or equivalent keystroke rate.
  • Completion of FEMA incident systems courses 100, 144, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Good knowledge of the procedures and operations of the 911 Call Center.
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with diverse cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good knowledge of the geography of the City of Minneapolis.
  • Starting salary of $33.023, potentially higher based on relevant experience.
  • Union representation by Minnesota Public Employees Association (MnPEA).
