About the position

The 911 Public Safety Communications Dispatcher serves as the first responder to 911 calls, providing critical assistance to callers in emergency situations. This role involves responding to law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical service calls, dispatching appropriate personnel, and maintaining communication with both callers and emergency responders. Dispatchers must operate under pressure, utilizing written guidelines and their judgment to manage complex situations effectively.

Responsibilities

• Operate telephone and radio equipment to receive and transmit emergency calls.
• Interview callers to obtain detailed information related to emergencies.
• Provide emergency medical, fire, and safety aid instructions to callers.
• Triage and prioritize emergency responses based on caller information.
• Dispatch appropriate agencies and personnel to the scene of emergencies.
• Maintain communication with callers and emergency personnel during incidents.
• Coordinate responses among police, fire, and other emergency personnel.
• Contact utility companies and other agencies for additional support when necessary.
• Log and maintain records of emergency incidents and responses.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Entry-level position with less than 1 year of experience.
• Ability to operate telephone and radio equipment effectively.
• Strong writing and communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple emergency messages.

Nice-to-haves

• POST certification as an Emergency Communications Officer within one year of hire.
• Typing skills with a minimum of 35 words per minute.
