About the position

The 911 Public Safety Communications Dispatcher plays a critical role in the Department of Emergency Management by receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls. This position requires effective communication and quick decision-making to ensure public safety and efficient response from police, fire, and emergency medical services. Dispatchers work in a fast-paced environment, operating 24/7, and must be prepared to handle various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Receive incoming emergency (9-1-1) and non-emergency calls from the public and public safety agencies.
• Dispatch police, fire, and EMS field units to respond to calls using a computer-aided dispatch system.
• Evaluate incoming reports of emergencies and transmit accurate information to field personnel.
• Monitor and maintain the status of incidents and records of dispatched emergency service personnel.
• Disseminate information from law enforcement and emergency service networks while maintaining confidentiality.
• Maintain familiarity with area geography and recognize hazards to public safety.
• Respond to inquiries regarding police, fire, or emergency medical services and provide appropriate referrals.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in a public contact position providing information or services.
• CPR Certification.
• First Aid Certification.
• Typing experience of at least 1 year.
• Driver's License.
