About the position

The 911 Telecommunications Assistant Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and participating in the dispatching of law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, and non-emergency calls. This role requires emergency telecommunicator experience and involves working on assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The position entails utilizing specialized communication equipment and systems to manage emergency situations effectively while also supervising and training other staff members in the absence of the Shift Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and participate in dispatching law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services calls.
  • Operate a computer terminal and transmit information via DCI and NCIC networks.
  • Answer all emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch appropriate personnel, and provide necessary information to callers.
  • Monitor and operate TDD/TTY telecommunications equipment for hearing and speech-impaired callers.
  • Maintain radio contact with dispatched personnel and provide pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions.
  • Inform emergency response personnel of severe weather warnings from the National Weather Service.
  • Receive home and business emergency alarms from third-party alarm companies.
  • Determine the location of wireless callers using GPS or other geographical information.
  • Utilize dispatch protocol programs to categorize and prioritize emergency medical calls.
  • Assist in the supervision and evaluation of other staff members and training of new employees.
  • Monitor subordinate telecommunicators' radio responses and phone etiquette.
  • Complete Daily Observation Reports for trainees when acting as the shift trainer.
  • Perform shift supervisor duties in the absence of the Telecommunications Shift Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Emergency Telecommunicator experience is required.
  • High school graduation or equivalent combination of education and experience in communications or dispatching.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of initial employment.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no felony convictions and no Class B or greater misdemeanor convictions in the last 10 years.
  • Ability to obtain various certifications within specified time frames after employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of Communications Training Officer Certification preferred or able to obtain within 3 months of promotion/employment.
