About the position

The Custodian-Head Custodian position is a full-time role split between Yadkin Valley Academy and Davidson County High School, with an immediate starting date of August 20, 2024. This position involves performing manual labor that encompasses a variety of housekeeping and minor building maintenance tasks. The custodian will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the school facilities, which includes cleaning floors, windows, bathrooms, and other areas as needed. The role requires the use of various tools and light equipment, and the custodian will also be responsible for building security and may engage in routine grounds maintenance. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, exposing the custodian to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, and human body fluids, necessitating adherence to OSHA requirements regarding bloodborne pathogens. The custodian will work under regular supervision, with performance evaluated through observation and inspection to ensure thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties. Essential job functions include vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, cleaning restrooms and fixtures, shampooing carpets, and buffing and waxing floors. The custodian will also stock restrooms with necessary paper products and soap, replace bulbs and fuses, and perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks. This role requires the operation of power tools and maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies. Additional responsibilities may include setting up rooms for meetings, moving furniture, and ensuring that heating and air conditioning systems are functioning properly. The custodian is expected to perform related tasks and any other duties assigned by the Principal, contributing to a clean and safe environment for students and staff.

Responsibilities

• Cleans buildings including floors, windows, bathrooms, and fixtures.
• Stocks restrooms with paper products and soap.
• Replaces bulbs, fuses, and toilet and sink parts; unstops clogs.
• Performs maintenance tasks such as removing leaves and debris, cleaning sidewalks, and parking lots.
• Locks and unlocks buildings, sets up rooms for meetings, and moves furniture.
• Hauls off trash and ensures heating and air conditioning are operating properly.
• Makes minor repairs to furniture and maintains an inventory of cleaning supplies.
• Operates power tools including vacuum cleaners and steam cleaners.
• Performs related tasks and all other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Requirements

• Ability to read and write.
• Any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Working knowledge of methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.
• Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in cleaning and maintenance.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
• Some knowledge of basic custodial and cleaning practices.
• Ability to work productively without close supervision and respond courteously to citizens.
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
• Required to obtain a CDL and Bus License.
