About the position

The Forester 2 position involves professional forestry work under general supervision, focusing on managing and maintaining state forests and providing technical expertise in forestry practices. The role includes responsibilities such as collecting forest inventory data, making recommendations for public use of state forests, and overseeing the work of vendors and contractors. This position is essential for ensuring sustainable forest management and public engagement with forest resources.

Responsibilities

  • Addresses feedback from landowners and public agencies, gathering information to recommend actions.
  • Makes recommendations regarding public use of state forests, including road access and vehicle restrictions.
  • Conducts timber cruising activities and boundary line inspections on steep and rough terrain.
  • Collects forest inventory data, including tree/site data and information on invasive species.
  • Uses mapping software to document road and inventory plot locations and boundaries.
  • Drafts specifications for the construction of state forest roads.
  • Designs public use areas and trails on state property.
  • Delineates forest management units based on various data variables.
  • Maintains relationships with emergency personnel and other state agencies.
  • Provides technical expertise regarding forestry practices and forestland management.
  • Uses GIS software to enter spatial data and create compartmental plans.
  • Writes and implements State Forest Compartment Plans using inventory data.
  • Oversees and coordinates the work of vendors and contractors as the agency's on-site representative.
  • Communicates with the public and various organizations about services and programs.
  • Prepares and presents information to outside organizations.
  • May assist in wildland fire response and prescribed fire applications.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in forestry or a similar natural resource curriculum.
  • Experience equivalent to one year of professional forestry, wildlife, or natural resources work.
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Possession of a Forest Inventory Analysis Certification in some positions.
  • Possession of a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in some positions.
  • Ability to pass a physical fitness test for wildfire activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate coursework in forestry, wildlife, or natural resources may substitute for required experience.
