About the position

The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, specializing in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) with a focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP). The successful candidate will contribute to the M.S. program in NLP, develop a research program, teach courses, and engage in university service while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the academic community.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the M.S. program in Natural Language Processing at the Silicon Valley campus.
• Develop and maintain a robust research program in Generative Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing.
• Advise graduate students in their research areas.
• Obtain external funding for research initiatives.
• Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the curriculum.
• Perform university, public, and professional service activities.
• Interact with researchers in Silicon Valley's industrial research and development labs.
• Travel between the Silicon Valley campus and the main UCSC campus as required.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in computer science or a relevant field, expected to be completed by June 30, 2025.
• Demonstrated record of research in Generative Artificial Intelligence and/or Natural Language Processing.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in language modeling and model explainability.
• Knowledge of multimodal understanding and synthesis.
• Research contributions to GenAI for social good and human-robot interaction.
