About the position
The Support Nurse assists the Certified School Nurse in providing medical care and support to students within the school environment. This role involves following nursing protocols, maintaining health records, and ensuring a safe and healthy atmosphere for students and staff. The Support Nurse acts as a liaison between medical personnel, parents, and school staff, addressing the health needs of students and providing emergency care when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Follow procedures and practices consistent with current approved nursing strategies for assessment and intervention.
- Provide health room coverage under the guidance of the Principal and Certified School Nurse.
- Provide information to Teachers and Administration on the medical condition of students.
- Serve as a liaison between medical personnel, parents, and school staff for ill or injured students.
- Assist with health screenings according to State policies and guidelines.
- Render emergency care to a student or staff member when injured or ill.
- Inform the Principal and Certified School Nurse about exclusion or readmission of students with infectious diseases.
- Dispense medication and provide first aid as necessary.
- Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary conditions and standards.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by District policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.
Requirements
- High School Diploma required by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing for Licensure as a Practical Nurse.
- Minimum two years of experience in a related field.
- Current PA License as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse required.
- Current First Aid and CPR/AED Certificates required.
- Act 34/151/114/126/168 Clearances/Certifications required.
Nice-to-haves
- Knowledge of K-12 Education and ability to manage resources to support the specific school.
- Ability to learn new technological resources and tools with minimal training.
