About the position

The A&E Underwriter, AVP/VP position is a critical role within the A&E Division, focusing on the evaluation, analysis, and determination of appropriate terms and conditions for various insurance products. This includes coverage for Architects and Engineers, Contractors, Project placements, and Excess placements across all lines. The AVP/VP will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with producers and insured contacts, particularly those within the ENR 500 group, to facilitate business growth and ensure effective underwriting practices. In this role, the AVP/VP will review and analyze underwriting submissions, establishing a robust network of market contacts while acting as the lead marketer for A&E and Construction Professional in their designated territory. The position requires a thorough understanding of underwriting principles, allowing the individual to underwrite risks according to the company's business strategy, ensuring that selected risks are quoted appropriately. The AVP/VP will also be tasked with presenting accounts to customers, pricing and analyzing coverage, and authorizing quotes, binders, and invoices as necessary. The role involves attending client and broker meetings, negotiating terms for new and renewal business, and assisting in the development of data and reports as needed. The AVP/VP must ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and maintain profitability goals through disciplined pricing strategies. Participation in underwriting audits and collaboration with various internal departments, including Claims, Accounting, IT, and Legal, is also essential. Additionally, the AVP/VP will represent the company at important industry conferences and seminars, enhancing the company's visibility and networking opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze underwriting submissions
  • Establish a network of market contacts and act as the lead marketer of A&E and Construction Professional in your territory
  • Underwrite to appropriate terms and conditions following the Company business strategy to quote selected risks
  • Present accounts to customers
  • Price and analyze coverage, structure and exposures
  • Authorize quotes/binders/invoices as appropriate
  • Attend client/broker meetings as applicable
  • Negotiate with brokers and clients for new and renewal business
  • Assist in the development and formulation of data/reports as needed
  • Ensure that underwriting pricing and discipline are followed to meet profitability goals, complying with underwriting guidelines, systems and procedures
  • Attend underwriting audits as needed
  • Liaise with brokers, internal auditors and Claims, Accounting, IT and Legal departments as appropriate
  • Attend important industry conferences and seminars as appropriate

Requirements

  • 10 years Professional liability underwriting experience, or equivalent broker experience
  • Experience in architects and engineers (A/E) exposure analysis, Contractors exposure analysis, project specific professional liability placements and a working knowledge of A/E/Contractors specialty producers and brokers
  • Solid communication skills, computer skills, and organizational skills
  • Insurance certification preferred (CPCU or RPLU)
