About the position

The Senior Program Manager at the American Bar Association (ABA) is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of programs within the Center for Global Programs. This role involves applying program management principles, developing new concepts and techniques, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Senior Program Manager will lead project management efforts, business development initiatives, and manage program staff, contributing to the ABA's mission of advancing the rule of law and ensuring access to justice globally.

Responsibilities

  • Leads theory of change and work plan development, activity budgeting, and oversight of all programs within a program management unit.
  • Develops and implements MEL components in coordination with the MEL team, including program performance indicators and evaluation questions.
  • Manages expenditures and conducts budgetary analysis to ensure optimal budget utilization under grants.
  • Leads the proposal development process for large programs, often exceeding $1,000,000.
  • Cultivates relationships with donors and key partners, liaising with program officers and representatives.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders to foster working relationships with host governments and NGOs.
  • Manages program staff and oversees HR matters in the field and DC.
  • Implements risk mitigation strategies and identifies potential risks proactively.
  • Coordinates with communications and outreach departments for various products and updates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least eight (8) years of program management experience; OR a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school or master's degree and at least six (6) years of program management experience.
  • At least four (4) years of previous supervisory experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Degree in international development or a relevant discipline.
  • Previous experience in managing international development and human rights programs.
  • Knowledge of relevant region/country.
  • Experience managing programs in relevant region/country both overseas and from headquarters.
  • Interest in rule of law, democracy, governance, human rights, gender equality, and social inclusion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Effective time management and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills and familiarity with social media.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with proficiency in other languages preferred.
