About the position
The ABE/HiSet Teacher is responsible for instructing parolees, probationers, and inmates in adult basic education and Hi-Set preparation. This part-time role involves coordinating educational groups, developing individual education plans, and providing educational materials and information to participants. The teacher will work closely with inmates and correctional staff, requiring a high degree of resourcefulness and confidentiality.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate, supervise and monitor education groups
- Make referrals to external education programs in the community
- Gather educational history on participants and determine appropriate placement into courses
- Develop individual education plans
- Provide materials and educational information for participants, including scheduling Hi-Set testing
- Select, order and maintain inventory of classroom materials
- Exercise considerable judgment and work independently
- Make regular contact with inmates and House of Correction staff
- Act as a liaison for participants with the Department of Education regarding courses, diplomas, and books
- Maintain student records and prepare reports as required
- Keep attendance records
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
- Two (2) years teaching experience
- General knowledge of the purpose of a correctional facility
- Ability to deal effectively with individuals and groups
- High degree of confidentiality for access to client records
- Ability to communicate in a direct, clear and professional manner
- Ability to follow moderately complex written and oral instructions
- Regular and reliable attendance is required
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug/health screening
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts Driver's License
