About the position

The Able Seaman (M) position involves working as a watch stander or day worker within the Deck Department of a maritime vessel. As a watch stander, the individual will be responsible for standing wheel, anchor, and gangway watches as directed, ensuring a high level of alertness at all times. During a wheel watch, the Able Seaman must maintain a steady course, properly execute all rudder orders, and communicate effectively using navigational terms related to heading and steering. This role is critical for the safe navigation and operation of the vessel, requiring constant vigilance and adherence to maritime protocols. In the capacity of a day worker, the Able Seaman will engage in general maintenance, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of materials, equipment, and areas within the Deck Department. This includes performing maintenance tasks such as chipping, scraping, soundings, priming, painting, and cleaning various parts of the ship, including the hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear, smoke stack, lifeboats, rescue boats, life rafts, and emergency and damage control gear. The incumbent is also responsible for learning the location and proper use of emergency equipment, lifesaving equipment, damage control equipment, and safety equipment. Additionally, the Able Seaman will perform all operations related to the launching of lifesaving equipment and conduct security inspections of the ship. This position is essential to the overall safety and functionality of the vessel, and all duties outlined are considered critical functions of the role. The Able Seaman will also be expected to perform other duties as assigned. SIU mariners typically work a rotation of four months on with two months off, and they are provided with a private room and bathroom during their time on board. Compensation includes a monthly base wage, regular overtime, weekend overtime, holiday overtime, and vacation pay. Responsibilities

  • Stand wheel, anchor, and gangway watches as directed, maintaining alertness at all times.
  • Maintain a steady course during wheel watch and properly execute all rudder orders.
  • Communicate using navigational terms related to heading and steering.
  • Perform general maintenance, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of materials and equipment in the Deck Department.
  • Conduct maintenance tasks such as chipping, scraping, soundings, priming, painting, and cleaning of the ship's hull, decks, superstructure, and cargo gear.
  • Learn the location and use of emergency equipment, lifesaving equipment, damage control equipment, and safety equipment.
  • Perform operations connected with the launching of lifesaving equipment.
  • Make security inspections of the ship.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen of at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess and maintain a U.S. Passport.
  • Hold a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Possess a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariners Credential.
  • Have a valid Medical Certificate.
  • Pass the SIU Physical and Drug test.
  • MMC endorsed as: Able Seaman Unlimited, or any unlicensed rating in the deck department.
  • Current STCW Certificate endorsed as: Able Seafarer - Deck and Ratings Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW).
  • At least 2 years of sea time in a deck approved rating.

Nice-to-haves
