About the position

The Learning Specialist position is focused on providing academic support to student-athletes at a collegiate level. This role involves assessing individual learning needs, developing tailored academic support plans, and coordinating with various academic support teams to ensure student-athletes achieve their academic goals. The position also includes responsibilities related to study hall coordination and advising, requiring a commitment to academic integrity and compliance with relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with educational screenings and assessments of incoming student-athletes to determine individual learning needs and appropriate academic strategies.
  • Develop and implement individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes.
  • Coordinate academic support plans for an assigned caseload of student-athletes with their academic support team.
  • Monitor academic progress for student-athletes in assigned caseloads and communicate regularly with members of the academic support team.
  • Coordinate referrals to University academic support and campus resources.
  • Coordinate with advising staff to determine the study hall services for each student-athlete.
  • Coordinate the hiring, training and staffing of undergraduate study hall monitors.
  • Manage student-athlete attendance records using TracCloud system.
  • Create and distribute weekly attendance reports.
  • Supervise evening/Sunday study halls as needed.
  • Assist with schedule coordination of ASA's Internship/Practicum program.
  • Help develop and implement service delivery procedures in compliance with relevant legislation and policies.
  • Maintain confidential student records in compliance with relevant legislation and policies.
  • Serve as a mentor and resource to student athletes, making appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Assist with orientation for all new student athletes in their caseload.
  • Assist assigned sport coaches in providing academic information to prospective students and their parents.
  • Establish and maintain collegial, respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents and families.
  • Keep current on NCAA eligibility standards and monitor student athlete eligibility.
  • Assist with data collection for reports, including Academic Progress rate and Graduation Success rate.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • One to three years of experience in an educational setting, with responsibilities including administration of learning assessments and development of academic support plans.
  • Knowledge of formal and informal diagnostic and assessment instruments and techniques for academic and career testing.
  • Experience working with students in a college setting, preferably athletics, and a demonstrated commitment to the educational development of students.
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish excellent rapport with students, colleagues and the campus community.
  • Exhibits a high level of ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising undergraduate students or staff.
  • Familiarity with NCAA regulations and compliance issues.
