About the position
The Academic Advisor I at Texas State University plays a crucial role in supporting first-year students as they transition into university life. This position involves providing comprehensive academic advising, empowering students to achieve academic success, and guiding them in major exploration and career planning. The advisor acts as a mentor and resource for students and their families, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience during their first year at the university.
Responsibilities
- Deliver proactive, comprehensive academic advising tailored to individual student needs.
- Assist students in discovering and pursuing their best-fit major.
- Guide students through course selection and academic planning.
- Help students interpret academic policies, degree audits, and transcripts.
- Act as a bridge to other university resources and services.
- Engage with prospective students and their families, providing information about Texas State.
- Participate in key university events to aid recruitment and retention efforts.
- Maintain strong communication and collaborative relationships with academic departments.
- Conduct dynamic presentations to engage students and stakeholders.
- Keep meticulous and confidential student records, documenting all interactions thoroughly.
- Provide administrative assistance for the efficient operation of advising services.
- Adapt to a flexible schedule, including occasional night/weekend work for special events.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree.
- Evidence of attention to detail, demonstrated in a grammatically correct cover letter and complete application.
- Documented work experience with college students or adolescents.
- Demonstrated interest in working with first-year students.

- Advanced degree or hours toward advanced degree.
- Experience as an academic advisor in a college setting.
- Experience working with first-year college students.
- Bilingual (English-Spanish).
