About the position

The Academic Advisor II for Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware plays a crucial role in managing graduate programs and providing academic support to students. This position involves overseeing the graduate admission process, monitoring student progress, and serving as a liaison between students and faculty. The advisor also engages in outreach activities to promote educational programs and collaborates with various university departments to enhance the graduate education experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and provide advisement services to Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate students.
  • Maintain regular contact with and monitor the progress of ECE graduate students.
  • Interpret and explain Department, College, and University policies and procedures.
  • Manage the administrative aspects of the graduate programs, including recruitment processes.
  • Review students' Applications for Advanced Degrees to ensure compliance with degree requirements.
  • Manage the Qualifying Exam process and communicate requirements to students.
  • Prepare New Student Orientation information and present academic information to new students.
  • Assist undergraduate students considering the 4+1 programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Cybersecurity.
  • Manage the Departments graduate admissions process and respond to applicant inquiries.
  • Lead recruitment events and develop program information materials.
  • Plan and implement graduate student events such as New Student Orientation.
  • Support ECE graduate student groups and manage budget development.
  • Review and maintain records of financial transactions related to graduate students.
  • Manage the dissertation proposal and defense process.
  • Coordinate Graduate Committee Meetings and manage the graduate calendar and web page.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of academic advising experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Degree in student personnel, college counseling, or a related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in engineering, science, technology, or mathematics field preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and records.
  • Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and expulsion.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced working knowledge of academic recruitment and advisement policies at the university level.
  • Experience with UDSIS, Slate, and Tableau preferred.
