About the position

The Academic and Career Coach at BACR's Career Pathways division plays a crucial role in guiding participants towards understanding high-growth sectors, training options, and immediate employment opportunities. This position focuses on creating personalized education and career plans for youths and young adults aged 14-24, particularly those from priority populations such as justice-involved and system-impacted individuals. The coach will work closely with a caseload of clients to help them achieve their short- and long-term goals, ultimately leading to economic self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of Career Pathway projects including career panels and college trips.
  • Support the college enrollment process and navigate the UC and CSU systems for eligible students.
  • Coordinate with workshop staff to create new career and employment readiness workshops.
  • Act as the point person for post-secondary education and vocational training resources in Contra Costa County.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with high schools, GED services, colleges, and vocational training programs.
  • Create a curriculum to inform participants about in-demand and hidden career sectors.
  • Provide program updates and progress reports, completing evaluations and assessments as required.
  • Make referrals and connections for participants to other services and programs as appropriate.
  • Meet with participants weekly to monitor their progress and check in via phone, text, and email.
  • Train worksite supervisors on best practices for supervising interns and resolving workplace conflicts.
  • Connect with local employers to create internships and long-term job placements for participants.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and input data into databases regularly.
  • Participate in collaborative case conferencing sessions and facilitate meetings between stakeholders.
  • Support participants in maximizing financial aid and making informed financial decisions about post-secondary options.
  • Monitor academic progress and provide counseling focused on progress reports and report cards.

Requirements

  • 2+ years' experience in the workforce field.
  • 2+ years' experience working with multi-barrier youth and adults aged 14-24.
  • 2+ years' experience with workshop facilitation and lesson planning.
  • 2+ years' experience with college counseling or college access support.
  • 2+ years' experience working with system-involved youth and young adults.
  • Ability to work full time, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Successful completion of Live Scan/fingerprinting upon hire.
  • Experience with Youth Development, Restorative Justice, and trauma-responsive practices.
  • Familiarity with the criminal justice system and its impact on marginalized communities.
  • Valid California Driver's License and an insured, operational vehicle for work purposes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or currently attending college.
  • Knowledge of Bay Area communities and career and education resources.
  • Ability to assess crises and initiate action independently.
  • Experience working with undocumented transitional-aged young people in the Bay Area.
  • Familiarity with local community college networks and career pathways.
  • Ability to empathize with diverse backgrounds.
