About the position

The Academic and Student Success Advisor at California State University, Monterey Bay plays a crucial role in providing academic advising and student success coaching to both matriculated and prospective students across various majors. This position involves meeting students in diverse settings, conducting workshops, and developing personalized support strategies to help students navigate their academic journey and overcome challenges. The advisor collaborates with multiple departments to ensure students receive comprehensive support and timely graduation, while also promoting an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic advising to matriculated undergraduates in any major or minor.
  • Utilize an in-depth understanding of CSUMB undergraduate curriculum and student support services to address student concerns.
  • Conduct evening drop-in virtual academic advising and longer in-depth meetings with students.
  • Help students select appropriate coursework for internships, careers, or graduate school.
  • Collaborate with departments such as Admissions and International Programs to support timely graduation.
  • Provide in-depth student success coaching and develop success plans for students facing complex challenges.
  • Assist prospective students with academic advising information and resources.
  • Support the Director in identifying program needs and recommending changes in advising processes.
  • Prepare and deliver workshops on academic advising and student success topics.

Requirements

  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, with at least one year in academic, career, or retention advising.
  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • A master's degree in a related field.
  • Working knowledge of CSU and CSUMB academic and financial aid policies.
  • Experience developing and evaluating new programs to improve access and retention of non-traditional students.
  • Strong intercultural oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with student information systems such as CMS/PeopleSoft.
