About the position

The Academic Assistance Coordinator at Hawkeye Community College plays a crucial role in supporting student success through the coordination of peer tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) programs. This position involves overseeing the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of tutors, collaborating with faculty to enhance academic support services, and managing the implementation of online tutoring resources. The coordinator will also assist in budget management and outreach efforts to promote tutoring services across the campus.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate supplemental instruction and peer tutoring programs, including recruiting, hiring, and supervising Supplemental Instruction Leaders and peer tutors.
  • Collaborate with faculty and deans to expand Supplemental Instruction and peer tutoring assistance.
  • Develop SI and peer tutoring schedules and promote each semester.
  • Assist the director with coordinating online tutoring services and supervision of professional tutors.
  • Maintain TracCloud program for SI and tutoring services.
  • Coordinate the ongoing implementation of CircleIn by collaborating with deans and faculty to incorporate service into their programs/classes.
  • Assist the director with managing tutoring and STC program budgets.
  • Serve as STC site supervisor for AmeriCorps members assigned to the department.
  • Work in conjunction with the director, academic deans, faculty, and staff to provide a comprehensive academic support program.
  • Collaborate with others to promote open communications about campus tutoring services.
  • Maintain and revise materials for the College Reading and Learning Association certification for tutors.
  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of STC resources and outreach materials.
  • Assist with student computer, software, and password inquiries and requests for help.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and demographics.
  • Prepare required reports and charts, develop appropriate surveys, and complete evaluation documentation processes concerning all Student Tutoring & Computer Lab services.
  • Present STC computer lab orientations and study skills workshops.
  • Assist students with appropriate tutorials, programs, and applications in STC Lab.
  • Participate in campus committees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, human services, student affairs, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of management, teaching, or related experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling six (6) years.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead staff and/or student workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.

Nice-to-haves

  • Teaching or supervisory experience for five (5) or more years.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring college students.
  • Work experience within a community college setting.
  • Experience using a learning management system such as Canvas.
