About the position

The Academic Coach position is a part-time role within the Shepard Academic Resource Center, aimed at supporting first-year students in achieving their academic goals. Coaches, who are upperclassmen, will facilitate weekly meetings with their assigned first-year students, helping them develop essential academic skills and confidence. The role emphasizes relationship-building and skill development, providing a safe space for students to discuss academic challenges and improve their habits.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate weekly 30-minute one-on-one meetings with up to six first-year students.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings with the Assistant Director and Academic Coaching Coordinator.
  • Prepare for meetings with Coachees and complete follow-up notes.
  • Develop professional relationships with Coachees to assist them in achieving academic goals.
  • Review and workshop various academic skills such as study strategies and time management with Coachees.
  • Complete administrative tasks and paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Assist with additional check-ins or administrative tasks as requested.

Requirements

  • Must be a current sophomore, junior, or senior at the University of Portland.
  • Must be in good academic standing at the University.
  • Comfortable with weekly one-on-one interactions with first-year students and staff.
