About the position

The Academic/College Success Advisor I - Career Coach at Hawkeye Community College is a full-time position focused on supporting students in their educational and career journeys. This role involves providing career and academic advising, coordinating registration procedures, and developing educational plans aligned with students' goals. The advisor will also conduct workshops, assist with job search strategies, and collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance student success from orientation through graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes and markets career services to students, alumni, staff, faculty, employers, and community.
  • Coaches students on career readiness and onboarding into various majors.
  • Assists students with job search strategies, resume/cover letter writing, interview tips, networking, and salary negotiation.
  • Conducts practice 'mock' interviews for students.
  • Assists with general and industry-specific career fairs throughout the year.
  • Evaluates and interprets student potential through aptitude and vocational assessments.
  • Stays up-to-date on employment trends and job outlook.
  • Assists students in forming realistic vocational/educational goals and plans.
  • Organizes and prepares student files for registration and degree audits.
  • Utilizes academic support services to enhance student program completion.
  • Creates and implements preventative measures for academic intervention referrals.
  • Presents and coordinates workshops for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Addresses and mediates student conflicts.
  • Interprets standardized tests for advising and course placement.
  • Manages student progress through individual appointments and group settings.
  • Utilizes student records and information through Datatel/Colleague and WebAdvisor software.
  • Maintains accurate records of student interactions in CRM Advise.
  • Conveys and interprets college requirements and provides referrals to resources.
  • Develops and revises written tools and oral presentations as needed.
  • Teaches sections of The College Experience or Career Exploration.
  • Covers duties of Academic/College Success Advisor II in their absence.
  • Assists in the training of new advisors and supervises interns and student workers.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Education, Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Conflict Resolution, or related field.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Knowledge of career/student development theories and trends.
  • Ability to administer and interpret career assessment instruments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse student population.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.
  • Ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform public speaking engagements.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Effective organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in teaching or advising in higher education.
  • Three or more years of related experience.
