About the position

The Academic Coordinator at Oklahoma State University will support the Upward Bound Program, which aims to assist first-generation college students and those from under-resourced backgrounds. This role involves providing educational counseling, coordinating workshops, and facilitating activities to empower high school students to successfully transition to college. The coordinator will work closely with participants from two local high schools, ensuring they gain the necessary skills to graduate from college within six years of high school completion.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, advise, and provide educational counseling for program participants.
  • Conduct frequent visits to target schools to provide workshops and guidance.
  • Document ongoing student contact logs, class schedules, and transcripts via a computerized database.
  • Assist in coordinating Upward Bound's social media and engage with students through various communication channels.
  • Serve as a liaison between Upward Bound and target schools/community partners.
  • Assist in collecting program data for reports and grant applications.
  • Conduct workshops, orientations, and seminars for participants and their families.
  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and assessing new participants.
  • Develop and implement strategies for retention and post-secondary completion.
  • Coordinate the Bridge Component for program seniors and facilitate summer college prep classes.
  • Participate in college committees as requested.
  • Complete mandatory training and professional development workshops.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, sociology, psychology, counseling, human relations, or related fields.
  • At least two years of experience working in federally funded programs or with high school students.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Public speaking skills to develop and deliver presentations and workshops.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to handle confidential information discreetly.

Nice-to-haves
