The Academic Counseling Specialist at Gadsden State Community College plays a crucial role in supporting at-risk, early alert, and developmental education students by connecting them with appropriate services and resources. This position involves collaboration with various support services to enhance academic success and retention, providing academic advising, and developing programs aimed at improving student engagement and completion rates.

Responsibilities

  • Connect at-risk, early alert, and developmental education students with appropriate services.
  • Collaborate with support services such as the Cardinal Tutoring Center and Student Support Services to provide academic support.
  • Provide academic advising focused on at-risk students and those without an educational pathway at enrollment.
  • Inform and refer students to institutional or external resources for academic or personal issues.
  • Assist students with university transfer, including course advisement and scholarship information.
  • Collect and analyze data relevant to enrollment and retention outcomes; evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Develop, implement, and assess student engagement activities related to retention and completion.
  • Encourage stop out/dropout students to return to Gadsden State through targeted programs.
  • Develop and deliver academic information/advisor training sessions for faculty and staff.
  • Assist new and continuing students in clarifying personal, academic, and career goals.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for the department, meeting all goals and timelines.
  • Assist with pre-college orientation and teach ORI 101 sections as needed.
  • Comply with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree or higher in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Personnel, Education, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in student academic advising, counseling, or a closely related area.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement programs that facilitate student success and retention.
  • Commitment to diversity and supporting the academic success of all students.
  • Ability to travel between campus locations.
  • Commitment to the teaching-learning process of the community college and open-door admission process.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
