About the position

The Academic Counselor II at the University of Memphis plays a crucial role in advising students on academic plans, enrollment strategies, and support services available within the Teacher Education Program. This position is responsible for enhancing student success and retention rates, managing advising documentation, and providing support for recruitment activities. The counselor will work closely with faculty and staff across various departments to ensure students are on track with their academic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Advises students on semester academic plans for enrollment and admissions criteria for the Teacher Education Program.
  • Utilizes Banner, UMdegree, Matrix, NAVIGATE, and other systems to document advising information and assist students.
  • Manages duties related to improving student success and retention rates, including Early Intervention.
  • Assists with managing external Praxis support programs for students.
  • Serves on the Student Success Team for the College of Education.
  • Audits student files to ensure enrollment matches the program of study.
  • Provides support in hiring, training, and development of staff and Graduate Assistants.
  • Maintains knowledge of University/School's rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Supports undergraduate recruitment activities including visitations and presentations.
  • Aids new students with admission and registration procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant area.
  • Two to five years of appropriate experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience in Banner and strong computer software skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Planning and time management skills.
