About the position

The Academic Counselor II at the University of Memphis is responsible for advising students on academic plans, managing enrollment processes, and improving student success and retention rates. This role involves collaboration with faculty and staff across various departments and requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills. The counselor will utilize various systems to document advising information and assist students in navigating their academic journey.

Responsibilities

  • Advises students on semester academic plans, admissions criteria, and long-term enrollment strategies.
  • Utilizes Banner, UMdegree, Matrix, NAVIGATE, and other systems for documenting advising information and assisting students.
  • Manages duties related to improving student success and retention rates, including Early Intervention and external Praxis support programs.
  • Serves on the Student Success Team for the College of Education and audits student files for enrollment accuracy.
  • Provides support and enrollment data to department chairs, faculty, and administrators.
  • Supports undergraduate recruitment activities, including visitations and presentations.
  • Aids new students with admission and registration procedures and assists with late registrations and drops/adds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant area.
  • Two to five years of appropriate experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience in using Banner and other academic advising systems.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including flexibility and adaptability.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook.
