About the position

The University of Washington (UW) is seeking a student-focused Academic Counselor-Senior to join the Foster School of Business. This position involves a wide range of duties related to the academic experience of undergraduate business students, including advising an assigned caseload of diverse students, processing admissions applications, and contributing to various project assignments within the Undergraduate Program Office. The Academic Counselor-Senior will provide holistic academic advising, assist students in navigating the university's administrative systems, and advocate for both students and the school's needs. This role requires independent decision-making, collaboration with a team of student services professionals, and the ability to perform responsibilities in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Advise an assigned group of approximately 300 students enrolled in Foster degree programs.
  • Provide holistic academic advising, identifying student strengths, interests, and personal development.
  • Discuss time-to-degree, graduation planning, major selection, and registration as it relates to career objectives.
  • Counsel diverse students experiencing academic or personal difficulties and make referrals to appropriate campus resources.
  • Document interactions with students via an online record-keeping system.
  • Assist students through the University administrative system.
  • Meet with high school, UW pre-majors, and transfer students to discuss the benefits of a Foster degree and the admission process.
  • Communicate the competitive nature of the program and strategize best approaches to enhance admission possibilities.
  • Conduct information sessions, new student orientations, and workshops for small and large groups.
  • Evaluate applicants for admission to the Undergraduate Program.
  • Act as a resource for advising and student service colleagues across campus and other educational institutions in Washington State.
  • Review applications for admission biannually on a tight deadline.
  • Contribute to the development of advising practices, systems, and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in higher education, counseling, business, or similar.
  • Minimum of two to three years of advising experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in student counseling, student services, or related fields.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume, team-oriented office setting.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to make independent decisions based on University and Business School policies.

  • Relevant Master's Degree.
  • A high degree of comfort with technology and data.
  • Experience with recruitment and advising of students related to a competitive program.
  • Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university.
