Foster School of Business is seeking a student focused Academic Counselor- Senior to join their team. An Academic Counselor-Senior performs a wide range of duties related to all phases of students' academic experience as a business major at the University of Washington including advising an assigned caseload of diverse undergraduate business students, advising prospective business students, processing admissions applications, and project assignments contributing to the Undergraduate Program Office. The Academic Counselor-Senior advises current business majors, case manages their assigned group of diverse students, and advises students applying to the major (incoming freshmen, UW pre-majors and transfer students). Administrative duties are part of the position as well: processing admission applications, project assignments and interfacing with faculty and staff across campus. Academic Counselors-Senior are charged with making independent decisions, collaborating with a team of student services professionals in the Undergraduate Program Office, navigating complex systems and policies at a large, de-centralized university, and performing responsibilities in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Academic counselors in the Foster School represent the University and the School on matters of admission, retention, education progress, and graduation of students. They advocate for both students and the school's needs and goals. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Academic Advising: 60% (Individual and group advising of students via drop-ins, 30-minute appointments, phone, email): * Advise an assigned group of approximately 300 students enrolled in Foster degree programs: o Provide holistic academic advising; identifying student strengths, interests, and personal development while being mindful of their individual identities and lived experiences. o Discuss time-to-degree, graduation planning, major selection and registration as it relates to career objectives. o Counsel diverse students experiencing academic or personal difficulties and barriers and make referrals to appropriate campus resources when necessary. o Document interactions with students via on-line record keeping system. o Assist students through the University administrative system. * Advise prospective students: o Meet with high school, UW pre-majors and transfer students to discuss the benefits of a Foster degree and the admission process. o Communicate competitive nature of program and strategize best approaches to enhance admission possibilities. o Counsel students on match between career objectives and Foster School opportunities as well as alternative educational options. o Conduct information sessions, new student orientations and workshops to small and large groups (up to 100) participants. * Meet with and advise applicants denied to the Foster School by discussing strategy and alternate programs. Administrative projects:25% * Evaluate applicants for admission to the Undergraduate Program. * Act as a resource for advising and student service colleagues across campus and other educational institutions in Washington State. * Review applications for admission biannually on a tight deadline. * Other administrative projects as assigned o Contribute to development of advising practices, systems, and processes. Projects could include but are not limited to: working with incoming exchange students, managing the Foster Honors program, advising team communication strategy, equivalency evaluation process, developing new programs or presentations to meet desired learning outcomes of academic advising. Activities supporting the mission of Undergraduate Programs: 15% (advising, career, diversity, and student services): * Serve and participate on Foster and University committees as assigned or designated. * Support Foster Undergraduate Programs events and participate fully in a fast-moving team environment where everyone is expected to roll-up their sleeves and contribute whenever possible. * Perform additional duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Advising or the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in higher education, counseling, business, or similar plus a minimum of two-three years of advising experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS * Student counseling, student services or related experience. * Must have strong verbal and written communication skills. * Must enjoy advising a diverse student body. * Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high volume, team-oriented office setting. * Must exhibit strong attention to detail. * Must be able to make independent decisions based on University and Business School policies and procedures. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS * Relevant Master's Degree * A high degree of comfort with technology and data. * Experience with recruitment and advising of students as related to a competitive program. * Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university. WORKING CONDITIONS Academic Counselors-Senior are professional staff. They typically work 40 hours a week in a private space. Some evening and weekend events may be required.
