About the position

The Academic Counselor at the University of St. Thomas plays a crucial role in advising undergraduate students on course registration, graduation requirements, and degree planning. This position involves providing academic coaching and support tailored to specific student populations, ensuring that students receive personalized guidance to enhance their academic success. The counselor will also engage in various projects and collateral duties that align with their skills and the needs of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Advise undergraduate students about course registration, graduation requirements, and degree planning.
  • Provide academic coaching and support for specific student populations.
  • Assist students in course selection, course sequencing, and developing four-year graduation plans.
  • Support a caseload of students, including those with Academic Warning status, focusing on time management and study skills.
  • Stay current on academic advising scholarship and engage in professional development opportunities.
  • Fulfill specific collateral responsibilities, such as providing technical direction for the Academic Counseling department.
  • Administer and certify military benefits for veteran students.
  • Advise and direct course registration processes for first-year, transfer, and re-enrolling students.
  • Meet with new transfer students to guide them on degree requirements and course registration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years of experience in an academic setting, preferably in academic advising or student services
  • Experience working with students from various backgrounds

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree
  • Experience as an academic advisor or counselor in higher education
