About the position

The Academic Instructional Designer at Christian Brothers University (CBU) plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience by collaborating with faculty to design, develop, and support various course formats, including online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. This position is situated within the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), which is dedicated to creating high-quality digital course content and assisting with curriculum development. The designer will also support continuous improvement in course design and delivery, ensuring that teaching and learning technology tools are effectively integrated into the educational process. In addition to course design, the Academic Instructional Designer is responsible for developing and supporting professional development activities aimed at faculty who wish to improve their skills in research-based teaching and learning pedagogy. This role serves as the primary contact for Canvas and other learning technologies, providing expertise and support for external contractual implementations of these systems. The designer will also ensure that CTL operations, policies, procedures, and guidelines are adhered to on a daily basis. The position requires a proactive approach to analyzing trends in student learning needs and preferences, designing innovative strategies and technologies to address these trends, and conducting pilot projects to test and implement successful solutions. The designer will work closely with faculty to match instructional strategies with student learning outcomes, focusing on enhancing student enrollments, course success, program retention, and timely graduation. Furthermore, the designer will be involved in developing multiple means of enhancing faculty professional development through various formats, including face-to-face seminars, webinars, and online communities.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and support online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses.
  • Create digital course content and assist with curriculum development.
  • Support continuous improvement of course design and delivery.
  • Foster the integration of teaching and learning technology tools.
  • Design and develop professional development activities for faculty.
  • Serve as the point of contact for Canvas and other learning technologies.
  • Support external contractual implementations of Canvas and/or Canvas Catalog.
  • Ensure adherence to CTL operations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Analyze trends in student learning needs and preferences.
  • Design innovative strategies and technologies to address student learning trends.
  • Conduct pilot projects to test solutions and implement successful strategies.
  • Provide instructional material production services to address learning outcomes.
  • Enhance instructional design procedures and service infrastructure.
  • Research innovative approaches for integrating learning theory and technology with academic instruction.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation agencies for distance learning programs.
  • Prepare and conduct technical training programs and classes.
  • Develop training materials and procedures for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assess training needs through surveys and consultations.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
  • One year of instructional design experience working with faculty/instructors/subject matter experts.
  • In lieu of a degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD or EdD Degree.
  • Instructional Design experience in higher education.
  • Teaching experience in higher education and/or K-12, preferably in online & blended/hybrid environments.
  • Experience designing and delivering faculty professional development in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of universal design for learning and accessibility standards for online learning environments.
  • Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons as they pertain to courses.
