About the position

As a member of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences International Programs (LASIP) team, the Academic Program Coordinator for Intercultural & Global Experiential Learning is responsible for the development, coordination, and enhancement of programs that promote intercultural understanding and global engagement among students, including the Global Leaders Program and its signature event the Social Innovation Forum, and the International Student Advisory Board; serve as a subject-matter expert and programming support for LAS off-campus and international experiential learning initiatives in LASIP and the LAS Student Academic Affairs Office (SAAO). The incumbent shares in GLP's mission to create inclusive and equitable environments that transform students and communities through cross-cultural collaboration, dialogue, and human-centered community building.

Responsibilities

  • Administer all levels of assigned program activities, such as Global Leaders Program, including program application brochure creation and maintenance in the online study abroad administration database (TDS), program budget creation and monitoring, staying current on on-site student support and accommodations services, and managing relations with relevant international, domestic, and on-campus partners.
  • Evaluate and implement changes to current education abroad administration policies, practices, and procedures and document individual program management guides for each program within the assigned portfolio.
  • Create and maintain records of current and potential internship placements, alumni achievements and career pathways, and student-centered resources for the GLP capstone project.
  • Stay current on trends and best practices in global education and experiential learning; develop and deliver workshops, seminars, and training sessions on intercultural competence and global experiential learning to assist faculty and staff planning programs such as LAS Honors, Campus Honors 'study away' courses, and field based learning.
  • In adherence with industry and campus standards, develop best practices for LAS faculty and staff, as well as LAS International Programs study abroad programs engaging in intercultural and or experiential-learning activities.
  • Coordinate intercultural learning outcomes assessment projects, using intercultural development tools such as the IDI, and GPI.
  • Serve on relevant campus and college-level committees dealing with global education initiatives.
  • Advise current and prospective students on program requirements, application process, scholarships, travel planning and logistics, and personal concerns for the Global Leaders Program and other programs as assigned.
  • Maintain walk-in and by-appointment student advising hours. Respond to student inquiries by email, phone, and through virtual and in-person advising sessions.
  • Develop and revise informational materials, websites, resources, handbooks, and other student-facing content.
  • Conduct informational sessions and assist with pre-departure orientation for all student, staff, and faculty participants in program travel.
  • Promote the Global Leaders Program and the Social Innovation Forum (and other LASIP programs) at student recruitment and yield events.
  • Support the LAS International Student Advisory Board and its activities, including weekly meetings, outreach, and engagement activities during LAS Lift Off, Quad Days, Illinois Abroad Day, LAS International Programs Study Abroad Fair, and other student-centered events.
  • Identify local community partners for design challenge themes each year.
  • Provide an orientation for community partners and mentors before the kickoff in the fall and spring semesters.
  • Act as the primary community partner liaison for GLP staff and student teams.
  • Recruit faculty members to instruct/facilitate courses and workshops across the four-year program.
  • Represent LASIP at on-campus events such as LAS Lift Off, Illinois Abroad Day, LAS Study Abroad & Global Opportunities Fair, and Pre-departure & Re-entry programs.
  • Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A total of two (2) years experience in education, training and/or work experience coordinating international programming, experiential learning, student development and/or community engagement in higher education or a professional organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • All degree background will receive full consideration. Preference will be given to those with degrees in the liberal arts and sciences.
  • Master's degree.
  • One (1) year experience specializing in coordinating support (teaching assistants, interns, instruction, administrative) in student leadership development and community engagement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in using design frameworks to address social challenges.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty members to design and/or implement courses.
  • An International experience that consists of a service-learning or community outreach component.
  • Experience living/working/studying abroad.
  • Effective project management experience.
  • Professional fluency in English and at least one other language, preference for Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Kiswahili, Portuguese, or Spanish.

Benefits

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Urbana-Champaign each week) after 6 months.
  • The budgeted salary range for the position is $60,000 to $72,000.
