About the position

The Academic Support and Writing Center Specialist at Dallas Theological Seminary plays a crucial role in supporting students' academic development, focusing on their holistic formation for ministry. This part-time position involves providing guidance on writing assignments, conducting seminars, and developing resources to enhance students' academic skills and success.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clear guidance and feedback on student papers, including thesis statement, organization, clarity, grammar, formatting, and adherence to the DTS Style Guide/Turabian.
  • Meet one-on-one or in group settings with current DTS students to encourage them, review assignments, discuss study strategies, and develop a plan for future academic success.
  • Conduct seminars focused on study skills, academic research, writing tips, and academic development.
  • Develop academic support and writing resources in collaboration with other DTS departments to meet student needs and assignment expectations.
  • Respond to student questions via email, text, or in-person in a timely manner.
  • Proactively contact students in need of academic support.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a variety of mediums demonstrating cultural awareness.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with a variety of ages.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to handle interruptions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with Turabian and willingness to become an expert.
  • Ability to work alone and alongside others in a team environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to become an expert on related academic software (e.g., Logos, Zotero, EndNote, etc.).
  • A DTS graduate or current DTS student in the latter portion of their masters or doctoral degree preferred.
  • A background in English, Composition, or Rhetoric preferred.
  • At least two years of related experience recommended.
  • Multilingual is recommended.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in academic support or writing center environments.
  • Familiarity with academic research methodologies.
