About the position

The Academic Support Specialist at Truman College is responsible for enhancing student performance through academic coaching and support services. This role focuses on aligning college assessment objectives with student needs, particularly for those who are academically at-risk, low-income, first-generation college students, and/or students with disabilities. The specialist will provide individualized services, mentoring, and guidance to improve academic performance, retention, and successful transfer to four-year institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Administers a new non-cognitive assessment to enhance student psychosocial skills.
  • Assesses students' strengths and weaknesses in Mathematics/Sciences and/or English.
  • Provides individual and/or group academic coaching sessions that connect to transfer, completion, and career programs.
  • Administers career advisement tools to support students' academic goals.
  • Creates study guides and review materials to focus students' attention on course material.
  • Coordinates tutoring and/or mentoring needs of student participants with available campus resources.
  • Works closely with department faculty to develop learning strategies for course retention and understanding.
  • Explores transfer and scholarship opportunities with faculty to enhance student motivation.
  • Provides advice and counseling to help students with academic and career goals.
  • Connects intensive coaching and mentoring opportunities to at-risk students.
  • Evaluates participants' academic progress and adjusts tutoring methods for effective intervention.
  • Develops and conducts academic coaching sessions and workshops to promote growth and connection to college life.
  • Assesses students' needs and identifies strengths and resources to resolve problems.
  • Creates weekly reports to identify trends within the classroom environment and students' unique needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, English, Mathematics, Science or related field required.
  • Master's Degree preferred and/or teacher's license is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years previous teaching or academic coaching experience required.
  • Computer proficiency with knowledge of various software programs.
  • Successful counseling experience with low-income, minority, disadvantaged, or students with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work with a variety of course material.
  • Knowledge of registration and school admission requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience and/or knowledge in areas of financial aid and/or admission and computer databases.
  • Self-directed and innovative approach to work.
